Abbott Lowell Cummings, noted authority on American architecture, received his B.A. from Oberlin College in 1945, and his Ph.D. from Ohio State University in 1950. In 1955 he became assistant director of the Society for the Preservation of New England Antiquities. He remained with the Society until December 1983, eventually becoming executive director.
